SUFFIELD, CT — A brief exterior ammonia leak caused evacuation of the H.P. Hood manufacturing plant on Route 159 late Monday afternoon as state and local first responders worked quickly to mitigate the scene.

Around 5:30 p.m., Suffield police, fire and ambulance personnel, along with mutual aid resources from several surrounding towns, were sent to the plant 1250 East Street South, just north of the Windsor Locks town line. "Systems responded properly to prevent any further exposure," Capt. Robert Palmer said.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) was notified and responded with its HazMat Response Team. HazMat teams continue to assess the situation, and the area has been closed, with routine traffic being diverted, Palmer said.

No injuries were reported to either plant employees or first responders, Palmer said.

A similar leak in Sept. 2024 closed the roadway in the area for more than eight hours.
