SUFFIELD, CT — In early Feb. 1922, James Joyce's novel "Ulysses" was published, the debut issue of Reader's Digest magazine was published, and Cardinal Achille Ratti elected Pope, taking the name Pius XI.

Of local significance, Feb. 1 was the birth date of Frances Hierl, who grew up along with five siblings on her family's farm in Suffield. She attended Suffield Academy, graduating in 1940.

Now known as Fran Morway, she turned 103 on Feb. 1, making her the oldest alumnus of the academy. She is currently the eldest resident at Suffield By the River, a senior living community, which recently celebrated her birthday with a party.

"Our beloved resident Fran turned 103 February 1," resident engagement director Nancy Crommett said. "The dining room was filled with residents and associates to celebrate her milestone birthday. She wore a purple tiara and a sash that read ‘103 and Fabulous.’ Her one request was champagne."

Crommett said Fran credits her long life to the home-cooked meals her mother made her, as well as staying active.

"Fran attends all exercise programs twice daily and weather permitting walks the perimeter of our large community," Crommett said.
