Summer Roadwork Starts Soon in Suffield

Suffield will see a four-month reconstruction project involving seven roads and two miles of pavement begin June 18.

The majority of the project involves drainage improvement and the installation of pipes for that purpose.

The seven roads comprising the project are Brookside Drive, Burbank Avenue, Fair Hill Lane, Huckleberry Hollow, Longview Drive, Randall Drive and Suffield Meadow Drive Extension. Construction will take place on one road at a time.

Besides drainage work, curb removal, recycling of existing road material and the addition of new pavement and curbs will all be performed as well. Additionally, the tops to all catch basins will be replaced.

The roadwork is part of the town’s pavement management program, directed by town engineer Gerry Turbet. The pavement management program was allocated approximately $850,000 in the coming budget year.

Other current road improvement projects include the repair of Boston Neck Road Bridge, which carries an estimated cost of $900,000. The other major project is improvements to Harvey Lane, an industrial road serving major town taxpayers Hood and C&S Wholesale Grocers. A town meeting on Tuesday approved a $250,000 small town economic assistance program (STEAP) grant for that project.

Suffield residents also approved bonding for $3,108,000 towards road improvements at a referendum .
