  1. In an effort to be all-inclusive and engage the senior population in the Haddam community, the Haddam seniors were treated to a summer picnic at the Haddam Neck Fairgrounds in late June. As part of the event, the Haddam Sustainability Committee was on hand to explain to them the ins and outs of the town’s Food Scrap Compost Program at the Transfer Station. According to an HK Now article, it was explained at the picnic that starter kits for those who don’t compost are available at the Tax Collector’s, First Selectman’s and Assessor’s offices for just $25. As part of the kit, you get a two-gallon countertop bin, a six-gallon transport bin and a roll of 25 compostable bags.   3. Outdoor fitness in the Nutmeg State is something to savor during these beautiful summer months. In a Middletown Press article, the six key benefits of exercising outdoors are discussed in length. Number one is boost your mood. The article explains that sunshine and exercise are ways to increase your serotonin levels. "Serotonin is a hormone that stabilizes your mood and regulates feelings of happiness and overall well-being." Other benefits discussed include; challenging your body, outside workouts are free and accessible, fresh air is always a plus, stimulating your senses and getting more social. So next time you want a good workout, get outside and see how you feel! (Middletown Press)
