Higganum Man Charged With Assaulting Pregnant Girlfriend

The following information was provided by Sgt. Sal Calvo and court documents. An arrest does not constitute a conviction and all defendants are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The following article was written and reported by Michael Hayes.

A Higganum man was arrested early Monday morning after state police say he assaulted his pregnant girlfriend.

Jerry Lee Sweeny, 34, of 345 Hubbard Road, is charged with third degree assault, assault on a pregnant woman, second degree threatening and disorderly conduct.

Pollice responded to the home around 1:45 a.m. for a domestic disturbance, according to Sgt. Sal Calvo. Upon their arrival, police discovered that Sweeny had allegedly hit his 31-year-old girlfriend who is six month pregnant. He also threw cat litter and water at her, Calvo said.

A judge set Sweeny's bond at $35,000 and a protective order has been issued against him.

He's due back in court later this month.
