Middlesex Community College Publishes Update For July 2021
Beginning in the fall, all students who participate in on-campus activities are required to be fully vaccinated against coronavirus.

Welcome back to the Middletown campus for Enroll in a Day—one-stop, in-person fall semester registration events on July 10, August 7, and August 21. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet with an advisor, finalize class schedule, and register for the fall semester. Classes begin August 26. Student services, financial aid, and business offices representatives are available and the MxCC Bookstore will be open. Go to College for Free with PACT
Pledge to Advance Connecticut (PACT) is a FREE community college program in Connecticut. PACT funding covers the gap between federal and state grants and community college tuition and mandatory fees. To receive PACT funding, apply, register for classes (12+ credits), and fill out the FAFSA. Entry into the program will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Details here.
Emeriti Recognized During Graduation
CEO Steve Minkler conferred emeritus status to Judy Mazgulski (left), former retention specialist who retired from MxCC (after 25 years) last August. She has earned the title of Student Services Professional Emerita. Pamela Frost, professor of mathematics, who is retiring in August 2021 after 43 years in education, was has earned the title Professor Emerita. She wrote, “It is my hope that I have made a positive difference in the lives of my students and the institutions that employed me.” Watch ceremony.

Professor Hits Home Runs Teaching Math
Baseball's All-Star Game is coming up but for MxCC professor, Steve Krevisky, baseball and statistics are part of his daily life as a math teacher. Steve, who began teaching at Middlesex in 1985, uses baseball stats to make learning about math fun for his students. A New York native and lifelong NY Yankees fan, Steve is president of the Connecticut Smoky Joe Wood Chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) and coordinates the annual math contest for community college students. New MxCC PASS Program Funded by State Grant
MxCC was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Connecticut Office of Higher Education to establish a PASS Program (Promoting Academically Successful Students) for the 2021–22 academic year. The program will work with a cohort of 50 students of color who are on academic probation with the goal to improve their grades and maintain or restore good academic standing and financial aid. Grant funds will support a program coach, summer fast-track English and Math workshops, cohort-building events, and academic enrichment activities such as tutoring and service-learning projects.
New Skill Up Manufacturing Graduates
Congratulations to the latest Skill Up for Manufacturing graduates! Skill Up is a free, five-week manufacturing course for individuals to gain the skills needed to move quickly into entry-level manufacturing jobs. Register today for the next session (July 26–August 27) at MxCC and Vinal Technical High School in Middletown.
Birdies for Charity Fundraiser
The MxCC Foundation again participated in the Travelers Championship Birdies for Charity fundraising program. Donations to the Foundation via the online platform are increased with 15% bonus, sponsored by Webster Bank. The golf event was held in June and brought in nearly $3,000 to the Foundation. Thank you to those who donated!

STEAM Train Rolls Through Campus
Last month, the Connect-In-Tech Camp, hosted by Professor Donna Hylton’s STEAM Train initiative, took place at MxCC. Students (ages 13-19) learned about bits and bytes and how computers process data with hands-on activities and guest speakers during the weeklong event. They also received certificates, MxCC bags, and new laptops or a scholarship to enroll in a technology class at MxCC.
Magic Food Bus Continues to Serve
The Magic Food Bus pantry served 1,797 household members this past year (up about 18% over the previous year) and distributed 7,935 units of food (about 11% up from the previous year). For the summer, the food pantry is located on the second floor of Founders Hall and open Wednesday and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thank you to everyone who has supported the Magic Food Bus and Veterans Memorial Garden throughout the year!
