Here are the top four stories in The Haddams-Killingworth today:
- The Regional School District 17 Board of Education listed the top ten seniors from the Class of 2022: Kyla Mazzotta, Olivia Wettemann, Libby Riggs, Madeline Keithan-Resnick, Olivia Swanson, Alexis Wettemann, Jacqueline Flaherty, Yumiko Imai, Benjamin Williams (Salutatorian), Duncan Beauchamp (Valedictorian). Congratulations students! (Region 17 Board of Education via Facebook)
- The top teachers of the year have been recognized by the Regional School District 17: Rebecca Harkin BES, Donna Jones KES, Heather Barse HKIS, Leanne Honious HKMS, Ryan Kish HKHS. Ryan Kish also won District RSD 17’s Teacher of the Year! Congratulation teachers! Enjoy your summer! (Region School District 17 via Facebook)
- Giving farmers a break, Governor Ned Lamont has announced a diesel fuel tax exemption. As is evident at gas stations throughout the country the price of diesel fuel (and gas prices) has skyrocketed. This inflation is felt severely by the farmers who are also battling the impact of the pandemic and inflation. According to a Fox 61 Hartford news article, "the current rate for the diesel tax in CT stands at 40.1 cents per gallon. The state's fixed price diesel tax was created more than a decade ago to provide predictability for businesses, but this year is up in the air considering the sharply rising prices. State law, however, requires the rate to be adjusted every year. The diesel tax exemption will go into effect on July 1. Connecticut's Department of Revenue Services has until June 15 to decide the new rate." (FOX61 Hartford)
- There are moose in Connecticut! Yes, that's right! There have reportedly been seven moose sightings in the Nutmeg State in seven days. Don't worry though, none have been spotted in the tri-town area, yet! The sightings have been isolated to the Windsor Locks area according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. One explanation for the uptick in sightings is that it's calving season, which means it's time for last year's babies to leave home in search of their own territory because mama moose are giving birth to this year's babies. So, keep your eyes open if you are in the Windsor Locks area, you may get a chance to see one of these majestic animals. (CT Insider)
