Here are the top five stories today in The Haddams-Killingworth:
- Tonight is the night for peak viewing of the rare alignment of five planets. This alignment won't be seen again for decades, and it is coming to a peak after the summer solstice when a crescent moon joins the parade. The procession of planets — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, in that order — will be visible just above the eastern horizon during an hour or so before sunrise through the end of the month, according to AccuWeather. The best date to mark is before 5 a.m.on June 24, when a crescent moon joins the planetary parade. The planetary alignment is visible without a telescope, though AccuWeather notes that Mercury may be hard to spot because it's the dimmest of the planets and will be the lowest in the sky. (Patch)
- House shopping online can feel like a somewhat blind process. Pictures don't always show all the fun little details, and they can sometimes make a fixer-upper appear more spacious and sparkling than it is in real life. That's where open houses come in handy: No more guesswork involved! Ready to see what's out there? To help you out, we've compiled a list of the three newest open houses scheduled in the Haddams-Killingworth area.(Patch)
- A new independent coffee shop has opened in Old Saybrook and it's getting a lot of attention. Taking up residency in the former Dunkin Donuts building, Mad Coffee Roasters is a family-owned small-batch roasting company, according to the business' website. (Patch)
- If you are accustomed to taking a swim at Roger's Lake in Old Lyme, or if you frequent the lake for boating and fishing fun, you might want to know that according to an Old Lyme press release, "the Lake had an herbicide treatment for the aquatic invasive weeds identified by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station on Thursday, June 23. The Pond and Lake Connection performed the treatment per DEEP Permit: AQUA-2022-083. The only restriction with this treatment is that the water should not be used for irrigation from June 23 through June 30. Signage has been posted around the lake at all access points. (Patch)

Are you a The Haddams-Killingworth resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
