- According to an article in HK Now, "Yumiko (Yumi) Imai, daughter of Masami & Susan Imai of Haddam, is ranked third in the Class of 2022. Yumi is a tenacious and driven student who seeks out challenges in the classroom. Yumi has taken advanced-level courses in all academic areas and, beyond that, teachers frequently praise her willingness to take risks in the classroom. She is always willing to share an answer or a point of view. Yumi balances this drive with an open, friendly attitude and a willingness to get involved in all aspects of our community. Yumi will attend Brown University, where she will major in biology and East Asian studies." Congratulations Yumi! (HK Now)
- Join the Killingworth Library for its Tuesday Book Club. The title for July is, "The Fountains of Silence" by Ruta Sepetys. In Madrid, 1957, under the fascist dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, Spain is hiding a dark secret. The discussion will be held in the library's meeting room. Extra copies will be available for checkout at the circulation desk. Newcomers are always welcome! (Press Release Desk)
- Black bears are sighted quite often this time of year throughout most parts of Connecticut, but when they start breaking into people's homes, it's time to call in the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. According to DEEP officials, a bear with "no signs of fear or wariness of people" was euthanized after breaking into a Canton home and trying to enter another on Tuesday morning. The bear reportedly first tried to get into a home through the front door and a window. It was undeterred when the homeowner tried to scare it away, DEEP officials said in a news release. Three hours later, the bear broke into a house about 400 yards from the first home. The decision to euthanize the bear was made based on DEEP guidelines for a bear that has entered or tried to enter homes, has shown no signs of fear or aversion to humans and poses a threat to the public's safety, officials said.
