A flurry of police activity at Bank of America in Niantic yesterday afternoon had many people wondering if the bank had been robbed.
In fact, East Lyme Police and state police were responding to a report of a "suspicious package" that a bank employee noticed had been left in the building.
The bomb squad was called in, the bank was evacuated and cordoned off to secure the perimeter but it turned out to be nothing more than a briefcase left behind by a customer.
The bank called the customer, who came to retrieve it—probably feeling a little embarrassed. It was good that people were alert, said East Lyme Police Sgt. Bruce Babcock, but even better that it turned out to be "much ado about nothing."
