Every Hero Has a Flag On Memorial Day in East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme

Volunteers place flags at the grave of every military man and woman who served in every war in American history.

East Lyme, Old Lyme, and Lyme have a long and storied military history and the number of flags flying at local cemeteries are testament to that on Memorial Day. Scores of volunteers are responsible for making sure no military man or woman goes unremembered today.

For instance, in East Lyme, which is home to the Army National Guard in Connecticut, 250 flags were placed at 17 graveyards throughout the town. The VFW and American Legion place flags on all graves for troops who fought from World War I onward. The Historic Cemetery Association ensures that all those who fought in the wars before then are remembered. That includes one grave at Holmes Cemetery, which is buried about a mile deep in the woods in East Lyme.

No one is forgotten on Memorial Day.
