Although the big parades are Monday, the first special event honoring veterans will be held on Sunday evening in Niantic. Here's the schedule:
Sunday, May 26: The East Lyme Veterans Council will sponsor the annual Candlelight Vigil at 7:30 p.m. at the Town Green. This year's theme is "Honoring Women Veterans." Grand Marshalls will be introduced for the Memorial Day parade.
Monday, May 27: The East Lyme Veterans Council will sponsor the Memorial Day Parade in Niantic. The parade begins, rain or shine, at 2:00 p.m. There will be no street parking on Main Street after 12 p.m. If any organization would like to participate, please call 860-437-7377.
In Old Lyme
Monday, May 27: Old Lyme’s Annual Memorial Day parade will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Lyme Street Fire Station and will proceed via Lyme Street and McCurdy Road to the Duck River Cemetery for a memorial service. The Memorial Day observance is sponsored by the Old Lyme Fire Department with financial assistance from the Town of Old Lyme.
In the event of rain, the parade will be canceled and an appropriate ceremony will be conducted at the Middle School Auditorium at 11:00 a.m. followed by refreshments at the Lyme Street Fire Station.
In Lyme
Monday, May 27: Lyme doesn't usually do much to mark Memorial Day but, as this is the 150th anniversary of the Civil War's Battle of Port Hudson and a number of Lyme men were killed and wounded in the siege, Jim Beers will give a brief commemoration at 12:30 p.m. in front of the memorial at Lyme Town Hall.
