Hot Stuff! Chris Atwood's Chili Wins The Prize In East Lyme

To spice up the East Lyme's Health and Safety Fair on May 17, town employees had a Chili Cook-off. Five people entered, including First Selectman Paul Formica, who made a chicken chili. (His secret ingredient is poblano peppers, by the way, and he cooks the chicken thighs first on a cast iron skillet.)

After a blind taste-testing, Formica took second but the big winner was Chris Atwood, who works in the town's building maintenance department. The not-so-secret ingredient in his "Spicy Paraclete" chili (which means "Holy Spirit") is ghost chili.

These are the hottest peppers on Earth—and I can attest to that. My mouth is still burning! Holy smoke! It was spicy—but delicious!
