Man Jumps Off Niantic River Bridge: Police

At 11:11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 15, police received multiple calls about a distraught man on the Niantic River Bridge.

The Waterford Police Department responded to the Niantic River Bridge after receiving numerous 911 calls reporting an individual on the Niantic River Bridge, appearing to be distraught. The man was in the center of the bridge at the edge of the railing, police said.

“As emergency services were en route, he jumped off the bridge into the water below,” Lt. Stephen Bellos said in a press release. “There was a boat in the area that immediately went to his location and retrieved him from the water.”

Waterford Police and East Lyme Police arrived on scene, met the boater at the state boat launch and assisted in getting the man out of the boat, Bellos said.
