Niantic River Bridge Opening Postponed

Due to weather, the ribbon cutting to open Niantic River Bridge has been canceled for Friday. It will be rescheduled but the date has yet to be announced.

It looks as if we'll have to wait just a while longer before we can stroll the boardwalk in Niantic. Although Parks & Recreation and Amtrak construction workers were toiling at a feverish pace today to ready everything for tomorrow morning's official ribbon cutting, and despite assurances last night from First Selectman Paul Formica that the show would go on rain or shine, apparently the company providing the tent for the event is worried about the weather.

"Given the latest weather forecast projections for the Connecticut region which are calling for heavy rains and the potential for hurricane force winds tomorrow morning and again in the afternoon, we have decided to postpone our Niantic Bridge event to another day," Petra Messick of Amtrak wrote in an email announcing the postponement. "We apologize for any inconvenience but our main concern is for the safety of our guests and employees so we hope you understand."

Formica said the event would be rescheduled but a date has yet to be decided upon.
