Science Class Incident Prompted Evacuation of East Lyme Middle School
A fire alarm went off at about 10 a.m. on Friday, forcing students and staff to evacuate to Lillie B. Haynes Elementary School. All students were able to return to the middle school about an hour later.

People may have been alarmed to see emergency vehicles racing to East Lyme Middle School today. At about 10:05 a.m. on Friday, the fire alarm went off in the school.
In a letter sent out to parents at noon, East Lyme Middle School Principal Judy DeLeeuw explained that the alarms were triggered by an incident in one of the science classrooms. All students and staff were able to exit the building safely and, due to the cold weather, were temporarily relocated to Lillie B. Haynes Elementary School to await the all clear from the fire department.
Students and staff were able to return to the Middle School at 10:50 a.m.
"The students and staff should be commended for following the school safety plan and the directions of the Administration," Dr. Deleeuw said in the letter. "We are very pleased with the actions of the school and the community to make this situation calm and safe."
