100 People Show Up at Forum on New State Gun Law

State Rep. Penny Bacchiochi, who represents Somers, was one of the state officials who held the forum this past Tuesday.

The below posting came from a press release.

VERNON — On Tuesday, Oct. 29, State Rep. Penny Bacchiochi (R-52) and Rep. Tim Ackert (R-8) hosted a public forum on SB1160 — An Act Concerning Gun Violence Prevention and Children’s Safety, legislation which adopted new regulations and restrictions on firearms. About 100 people came out to have their questions on the new law answered.

“The forum made it very clear that there are so many questions regarding the law. As legislators, it’s our responsibility to make sure these questions are answered clearly and positively, and addressed properly,” Rep. Bacchiochi said.

“This forum, I feel, was very helpful for residents as they were able to receive the information they need about the gun bill,” said Rep. Ackert. “Some of these changes residents were previously unaware of and we would like to make sure everyone has access to all the information that is available. This legislation is very detailed and understanding complexities of the bill is important – especially for hunters, collectors, small business owners, or any law-abiding gun owners who are concerned about how the new changes could affect them or their business.”

Rep. Ackert used a detailed PowerPoint presentation to expand on the characteristics of newly banned weapons and magazines and how to properly declare ownership of some weapons with the state. He also explained the newly created long gun eligibility and ammunition certificates. After the presentation, Rep. Ackert took questions from the audience regarding the new state certificate needed to purchase ammunition and other general questions about the newly adopted registration process.

The newly elected State Representative for the 53rd district, Sam Belsito, was also in attendance.

“While I do not support the gun legislation, it is important for all gun owners to be made aware of these changes so they can remain in full compliance with all state and federal statutes,” said Rep. Belsito. “This forum allowed residents to ask questions and get specifics on the new laws and regulations.”
