Atlantis Lifts Off on Final NASA Shuttle Mission
The shuttle, which twice carried former Tolland resident Daniel C. Burbank to the international space station, rocketed into space at 11:29 a.m. Friday.
Space shuttle Atlantis lifted into orbit at 11:29 this morning from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, FL, marking the end to NASA’s 30-year shuttle program.
It will be a while now before the US sends humans back into space, according to a story by the Associated Press and the Huffington Post.
The shuttle’s mission is to bring supplies to the international space station, according to the Washington Post.

Although not part of this mission, former Tolland resident Daniel C. Burbank, a retired U.S Coast Guard captain who was born in Manchester, was part of two, 12-day missions aboard Atlantis (2000 and 2006) to the international space sation, according to his NASA profile.
