Tolland Bake Sale Raises Thousands for Newtown
Event organizers said that the bake sale came about after numerous residents expressed an interest in giving back to Newtown.
A bake sale to benefit Newtown raised more than $3,500 this Saturday as residents from Tolland, Ellington, Stafford and more came together to show support for their Connecticut neighbors touched by tragedy.
Jan Rubino, one of the event organizers, said that the bake sale was put together after many residents expressed a need to "turn grief into action."
Local bakers, baking clubs and residents donated the goods, which filled up numerous tables in front of Wildflowers of Tolland. Several donations even came in from as far away as Arizona, Rubino said.

Wildflowers owner Heather Mathiau also donated a centerpiece to raffle off for those who stopped by and supported the sale, and green and white ribbons were available, as well, Rubino said.
Rubino added that there were many acts of kindness throughout the day, as residents brought by hot chocolate and coffee to keep up morale. A bag of the leftover baked goods was donated to the Tolland Fire Department at the end of the day, Rubino said.
