Tolland High School Swimmer Breaks Record, Wins Twice At Class M Meet

WEST HARTFORD, CT — A speed swimmer from Tolland High School won two events at the CIAC Class M boys swimming championships Monday at the Cornerstone Aquatics Center in West Hartford. In the process, he established a new Class M record during one of his victories.

Junior Benjamin Pope won the 50 yard freestyle in 20.75 seconds, eclipsing the previous Class M standard of 20.82 set in 2009 by Daniel Sweeney of New Canaan. Pope later won the 100 yard freestyle, covering the distance in 46.42 seconds.

Pope swims as part of the E.O. Smith/Tolland Hammerheads co-op program, which placed ninth in team competition with 232 points. Pomperaug High School won the division for the 21st time, compiling 819.5 points.
