HVCC At 55: From Pantry Staples to Pet Food Neighbors Are 'Stepping Up'
This year, Hockanum Valley Community Council is celebrating 55 years of service.

VERNON, CT — This year, Hockanum Valley Community Council is celebrating 55 years of service to Vernon and nearby communities.
Here's a message to the community from HVCC Director of Basic Needs Alex Gauvin:
For five-and-a-half decades, HVCC has provided health, healing, and hope through counseling, transportation, food assistance, and compassionate care.

At HVCC, meeting basic needs is more than a service. It’s a starting point for healing. And while the
agency’s reach spans many programs, sometimes it’s the smaller moments — like a family receiving food for their pet—that shine a light on what community really means.
Thanks to the generosity of Vernon residents, HVCC was able to increase its offering of pet food
alongside groceries in its food pantry. What started as a grassroots idea led by the community quickly grew into The Vernon Pet Pantry, a small but powerful addition created by Vernon residents to ensure families don’t have to choose between feeding themselves or their beloved pets.

The Pet Pantry is a reminder that there’s room for everyone to contribute, whether you're passionate about mental health, food access, helping animals, or supporting independence through transportation services that help seniors age in place with dignity.
You don’t have to start a program to make a difference. You can:
- Donate pantry staples not covered by SNAP, like hygiene items, cleaning supplies, and pet food (dry or wet cat and dog food) to help families care for their four-legged companions.
- Giving online—just $3.70 can help feed a family through HVCC’s pantry.
- Donate to support ridership fees and help keep our transportation program the most affordable option for seniors and others who rely on it for independence.
- Encourage a friend or loved one to seek help and guidance through HVCC’s professional counseling services.
- Spread the word, volunteer your time, or rally your workplace, school, or neighborhood to support HVCC’s mission of health, healing, and hope.
