VERNON, CT — A man was arrested after a potentially violent incident at a supermarket in Vernon over the weekend, police said.

The incident took place Sunday at the Stop & Shop Supermarket on Pitkin Road, according to an arrest report.

Police were told that a man inside the store, later identified as 41-year-old Robert Hazelton, was screaming in general, yelling racial slurs at employees and threatening to shoot people inside, according to an arrest report.

Hazelton was arrested and charged with first-degree threatening with an attempt to create a hazard or terrorize, threatening to intimidate with bigotry or bias, second-degree breach of peace and second-degree threatening, records show.

He was held overnight on a $10,000 bond and was to appear in Rockville Superior Court on Monday, police said.
