Pitkin Ready to Serve More Years as State Banking Chief
Howard T. Pitkin has been reappointed as the state Department of Banking Commissioner and to a national credit union association.

For 34 years, Howard F. Pitkin has been part of the state’s Department of Banking.
As of January, it appears Pitkin, a longtime Vernon resident who now lives in South Windsor, will be putting in a few more years on the job.
Last month, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy reappointed Pitkin as the department’s commissioner. In addition, Pitkin was recently selected to serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of State Credit Union Supervisors for a term that will expire in September.

Pitkin recently said he was humbled by the appointments and thanked the state’s residents for their confidence in the department and Malloy for his support.
“These are difficult years for us, both in state government and, especially, for the public with such significant economic challenges,” Pitkin said recently. “I've been very fortunate to have 34 years of service with the Department of Banking and have never been bored during that time. Each year seems to bring challenge and change, and the staff of the DOB has always done their utmost to protect the users of financial services and their commitment to the public has made my job far more manageable than it may have been.”

“I want to thank the people of Connecticut for their continuing support of the Department of Banking and for the many years I've been a part of it," Pitkin finished.
As the state’s banking department commissioner, Pitkin oversees the implemenation and regulation of state laws involving: “commercial banks, savings banks, savings and loan associations, credit unions, consumer credit, broker-dealers, investment advisers, securities, tender offers and business opportunities.”
Also under his supervision are: 40 state-chartered banks and thrifts; 34 state-chartered credit unions and heads a department with approximately 118 employees.
As a member of the NASCUS will be part of a national association of state officials that is responsible for “chartering, supervising and regulating the nation's state-chartered credit unions.” He previously served as a member of the association for a two-year stint from 2003-05 as the agency’s administrator of depository institutions.
“NASCUS welcomes Howard back to our NASCUS Board of Directors,” NASCUS President and CEO Mary Martha Fortney said in a news release. “We are confident he will provide invaluable contributions to our leadership group. We look forward to another strong and productive year for our NASCUS Board of Directors.”
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Pitkin is also a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve, a husband, father of two and grandfather of three.
