Rockville Public Library Offering Access to Continuing Ed Courses

Library card holders now have access to several online courses.

Residents can return to school at their leisure, and they can do it on the Rockville Public Library's Web site, www.rockvillepubliclibrary.org.

A Universal Class link will open the possibility of taking online, non-credit classes for personal enrichment, skill improvement or pure enjoyment, library officials said.

Patrons who have a valid Rockville Public Library card in good standing may select from more than 500 classes in a variety of subjects like history, computer skills, business and finance, math and science, fine arts, writing skills, social work and psychology.

GED training is also available for those studying to obtain a diploma.

Each class is divided into a number of individual lessons consisting of written material that must be read and studied, several assignments that must be submitted online, a test and a final exam after all the lessons in a class are completed.  Each student is assigned to a professional teacher who corrects and marks assignments and tests and provides a written response via e-mail, library officials said.

Students can ask questions and interact with other students taking the class. Those who enroll in a class have six months to complete the class, so enrollees may work at their own pace. Successful completion of a class enables the student to receive a certificate indicating the subject of the class and the grade earned.

Library officials said while these classes are not a substitute for any state or government licensing requirements or educational degree or diploma requirements, they can assist those who are studying to achieve these goals.
