Upcoming Public Hearings Will Tackle Pot Usage In Vernon

The two public hearings in Vernon will take place Tuesday, Aug. 17. The first is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. in council chambers.

VERNON, CT — Vernon Town Council agreed this week to hold two upcoming public hearings to discuss two proposed ordinances that would ban the possession and consumption of marijuana on town-leased and town-owned property.

The move comes just several weeks after Gov. Ned Lamont signed into law legislation that legalizes and regulates the adult-use of cannabis in Connecticut. Possession of cannabis among adults age 21 and over became legal in the state July 1, 2021.

Current ordinances in Vernon already ban alcoholic liquors and tobacco within the limits of any public highway, public area or parking area within the town. According to the Journal Inquirer, the proposed ordinances would also ban the use of cannabis and vaping. They'd also increase fines to $250 per violation.
