'Urgent' Food Drive On Tap In Vernon Saturday For People And Pets
A food drive is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Saxony Dog Park, 66 West St.

VERNON, CT — A special and "urgent" food collection event for families and pets in need, hosted by the Hockanum Valley Community Council and the Vernon Pet Pantry, is on tap for Saturday in Vernon.
The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Saxony Dog Park, 66 West St.
"Many families are truly struggling right now as SNAP benefits are on hold, federal funding for food pantries has been cut and grocery prices are rising every week. It's a triple-whammy for people facing food insecurity," said Lisa Moody, one of the founders of the Vernon Pet Pantry.

"The need for food is greater than ever. Please consider coming out this Saturday to help us provide food for families and their pets," said David O’Rourke, the CEO of HVCC. That’s why HVCC is teaming up with the VPP to have a special food collection effort this weekend to help families put food on their tables and food in the bowls of their beloved dogs and cats.
With Thanksgiving, approaching HVCC is in particular need of frozen turkeys of any size, along with canned and boxed sides.

Wet and dry dog and cat food will also be accepted, "so that pets do not go hungry on Thanksgiving or any other day," Moody said.
Volunteers will be on hand to help people unload their donations from their cars.
"Thanksgiving is a time that we count our blessings. It's also a time to share our blessings with others who may be in need," Moody said. "We hope to have a successful day and collect much-needed food for families and their pets."
Said O'Rourke, "During the holidays, it’s especially important to remember that many families are facing food insecurity. Every donation helps us ensure that everyone can enjoy a holiday meal. Come out this Saturday and help us provide food for families and their pets."
