Amy Demers, a resident of Wallingford and 2013 graduate of Lyman Hall High School, has been named a recipient of the GreatBlue Research Leadership Scholarship.
GreatBlue Research, headquartered in Meriden, Conn., partnered with the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) to offer two $1,000 scholarships for graduating seniors at an SCC member school.
“Leadership is an immeasurable quality that can guide students through school and life after high school,” Michael Vigeant, GreatBlue CEO, said. “Amy Demers is using her skills in research and presentation to serve as a leader and dedicate herself to greater achievements. We are proud to support her future through this scholarship.”
In applying, Demers submitted an essay detailing her efforts to enlighten children and teens about health and nutrition. Speaking specifically to individuals at-risk for topics such as obesity and energy drink abuse, Demers provides awareness and education. She is bolstering her leadership skills by gathering data, presenting results and discussing opportunities for health improvement.
“It is rewarding to be acknowledged as a leader, because I am typically a very shy individual,” Demers said. “It was encouraging to talk with groups that were responsive, listened and actively asked questions, and I appreciate that my work could be recognized through this scholarship.”
Demers will apply the scholarship to her studies in physical therapy and psychology at Muhlenberg College.
