Occupation:
CFO - Value Auto Sales
Family:
I have been married to my husband, Joe Tatta, for 18 years. Joe has worked at the Church of the Resurrection (now Saint Benedict parish) in Wallingford for 30 years. We built our house in Wallingford in 2010.
Does anyone in your family work in politics or government?
No.
Previous public office, appointive or elective:
I am serving my third term on the Town Council, currently as the Vice Chair. Prior to being elected to the Town Council, I held appointed positions on the Zoning Board of Appeals (Secretary) and Charter Revision Commission (Vice Chair).
Why are you seeking this office?
I firmly believe that the government works for the people, and not the other way around. Therefore, I feel that I can continue to serve the people of Wallingford with my focus on fiscal responsibility, results over rhetoric, and representing what is important to my constituents. It is my hope that my past six years on the Council have proven my dedication to this role and to the people of Wallingford, fighting for those I represent and never being afraid to question the status quo.
The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is ____, and this is what I intend to do about it:
The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is affordability. As a steward of your money, my past budget plans have lowered the mill rate and kept taxes affordable. This year, while I was not happy with the residential tax effect of revaluation, I was part of the team that supported a 3% reduction in proposed spending which ultimately passed. Every year, I scrutinize every line of every department’s budget…after all, it is YOUR money. Going forward, I intend to continue my practice of scrutinizing the budget and asking the hard questions, requiring justification for all expenditures. In addition, my goal for the upcoming term, if elected, is to work closely with the administration to grow our business tax base. That will be the most immediate way we can start to reverse the tax burden of the recent revaluation on our residents.
What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?
One aspect that sets me apart from some other candidates is my business background. In creating several businesses from the ground up with my family, I have seen firsthand the effects of government regulations, red tape, and interactions with land use boards and administrations... and how those can all positively and negatively impact the retention and recruitment of businesses in town. If we are to reduce our tax burden on residents, my business experience will, hopefully, continue to be a positive addition to the Council. With a business-based mindset, I am able to look at issues in an objective fashion, making decisions based on fact and not on emotion.
What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?
Public safety is paramount, and is the single most important role of government and elected officials, in my opinion; if we do not have a safe town, nothing else really matters. Wallingford was recently rated the second safest town in Connecticut. Public safety doesn't simply happen; it needs to be supported by the government and the community, and I intend to keep public safety as a top priority if elected for another term. My role as a volunteer firefighter/EMT in town has given me the benefit of understanding the needs of our first responders, and what is required to keep our town safe.
What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?
-My past budget plans have passed with bipartisan support and lowered the mill rate.
-My resolution to install air conditioning in the animal shelter passed unanimously, and it didn't cost taxpayers a dime.
-I secured funding for essential Fire Department items through grants, when budget constraints came into play.
-I am always able to work across party lines. I was voted unanimously by my fellow Councilors to be their vice chair.
-I have never missed a meeting or a vote in my six years of elected office. Working for the people of Wallingford is my priority, and I take it very seriously.
-I am responsive and accessible, as evidenced by problems I was able to fix for constituents, even if those solutions occurred outside of meetings and the public eye.
What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?
I have learned that one of the most important skills of being an elected official is truly listening to the concerns of those we represent. My grandpa always explained the importance of listening by telling me, "You have two ears and one mouth for a reason."
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about yourself and your positions?
It is my hope that my past three terms on the Council have shown you who I am as your representative. I never take elections for granted, and I take the role very seriously. I hope that I have earned your trust, your support, and your faith in me. If so, I would be honored and humbled to have your vote.
