Memorial Day Free-For-All; How Many Guns Does The WPD Have?

A look at the week that was.

This was a busy week this week, highlighted by some unique stories. But the most popular one was about a man who wants to know how many assault rifles the Waterford Police Department has.

Late last week, an East Lyme man filed a Freedom of Information request to the Town of Waterford asking how many assault rifles the police department has. The man’s reasoning was that under the new Connecticut gun laws, people who own assault rifles must register those rifles with the state. His idea was that if he should have to say how many guns he has, so should the government.

The department didn’t immediately respond to the request, although it is unlikely to give out that information. Other police departments have been hit with that request before and have rejected it, saying it would cause a safety risk.

On another topic, Waterford Beach is not manned by the town on Memorial Day. The last two years, there have been several issues as people have been going to the beach and drinking and acting rowdy, with nobody from the town there to stop them.

So, two women went to the Recreation and Parks Commission’s meeting this week and asked them to have people man the beach this Memorial Day weekend. However, the group said it might be too late to put someone there, but they said they would talk about it at their next meeting.

Thursday, the Waterford Police Department made a drug bust on Myrock Ave. The department recovered 12 pounds of marijuana and some cocaine from a house and have arrested a man who lives there.

On Friday, we detailed a bad bet Big Y made by moving into Waterford. The supermarket left Waterford in 2008, yet it is still paying money to be here until 2022. It has gotten Ocean State Job Lot to defray some of that cost, but half the space the supermarket used to occupy remains vacant.

Meanwhile, a $42 million tax on Millstone might soon be going away. And a Waterford priest arrested for child pornography is in serious condition following a stroke.

In other news, Waterford named its elementary school students of the year, one report said it is cheaper to eat out than in and fifth-grade students at Oswegatchie left a lasting gift to their school and their retiring principal. Oh, and we wrote this article, that did little to help our chances Friday night… (more about that event on Monday).
