Niantic Boardwalk Opening Postponed Due To Weather

After being closed all last summer, Niantic Bay Boardwalk, the new beach, and Cini Park will be open to everyone on Saturday.

There was a whole lot of activity at Cini Park this week as Amtrak worked to finish off the new 130 space parking lot and East Lyme Parks and Recreation worked on landscaping and setting up the parking kiosk in time for the Boardwalk's scheduled grand opening on June 7.

The official ribbon cutting, however, has been postponed due to weather.

"Given the latest weather forecast projections for the Connecticut region which are calling for heavy rains and the potential for hurricane force winds tomorrow morning and again in the afternoon, we have decided to postpone our Niantic Bridge event to another day," Petra Messick of Amtrak wrote in an email announcing the postponement. "We apologize for any inconvenience but our main concern is for the safety of our guests and employees so we hope you understand."

East Lyme First Selectman Paul Formica said the event would be rescheduled but a date has yet to be decided upon.

The town's section of the boardwalk, which was destroyed by a one-two punch from storms Irene and Sandy, will remain closed until the end of the summer,

Repairing it would have required Hole in the Wall Beach to close for the summer, and many events were already scheduled to take place on the beach.

"The preliminary design for our side is in and we have $3.1 million we can spend," Formica said.

Until work on the town's half of the boardwalk can begin at the end of August, the broken rubble of the old boardwalk will be fenced off for safety.
