Portrait of the Artist as a Young Woman

Waterford Artist Katie Fogg hosts an open studio tonight and through Saturday in New London

Waterford native Katie Fogg draws inspiration from many things but in many ways, her art reflects her own journey as an artist and as a person. Her subjects are women, from adolescence to adulthood, and reflect a world of fashion and music.

Her figurative works, "incorporate women I know to vague women that represent the growing stages of a woman from early adolescence to womanhood," says Fogg. "Because I use such bold colors and really broad, open composition, I’m always labeled as contemporary impressionism."

Many of Fogg's works are large scale, some as big as 10 foot. Fortunately, her studio in New London has 11-foot high ceilings, so she has the room to express herself. Her earlier works, landscapes painted plein air in Old Lyme and New London, also reflect her years as an undergraduate at Lyme Academy College of Fine Art in Old Lyme.

At tonight's open studio, visitors will be able to see just how far she's come as an artist. Fogg will have all of her work from 2006 to 2012 on display and for sale.

After graduating in 2010, Fogg moved to New York to study for her MFA at the New York Academy of Fine Art. Although she says she goes back and forth frequently between her hometown of Waterford and her home in Brooklyn, this weekend will be the first time she's been back at her New London studio in a while.

Tonight's opening reception is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at her studio at 300 State Street, Suite 310, in New London, and will feature live music from DJ Diag and refreshments and snacks provided by Hot Rod Cafe. Fogg's studio will remain open to the public for the remainder of the weekend, with visiting hours Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., although any additional times can be made by appointment by calling (860) 333-7213.
