Town Meeting Takes Action On Fire Station In Waterford

A project to construct the first town-owned fire station has been nearly two decades in the making.

WATERFORD, CT — Waterford Representative Town Meeting has approved a proposal to construct a fire station, according to the Waterford Fire Department.

The project is nearly two decades in the making.

"This action benefits every resident, business, and visitor to our town," the fire department wrote. "We are extremely fortunate, and grateful to have received such a resounding vote of confidence in our future as a department."

The first town-owned fire station will be at 439 and 441 Boston Post Road. The spot is where the Oswegatchie Fire Company is currently located. The two properties valued at $959,000 were moved to the town for a cost of $1 earlier this month.

"The location is vital," the Oswegatchie Fire Company said in a statement. "It has multiple access points to I-95, as well as the Quaker Hill and Cohanzie sections of town. It is the only station with rapid responses to Oswegatchie School and the Oswegatchie Historic District."

The new station will be 9,500 square feet, according to documents filed with the town.

The Waterford Fire Department thanked the Oswegatchie Fire Company "for courageously putting the needs of the community first" by partnering with the town and completing the transfer of the property.

"Without your willing commitment to forge a new path for the future, this much needed milestone would not have been achieved."
