Waterford Softball Beats Stonington, 1-0, in Play 4 The Cure Game

The Eastern Connecticut Conference rivals played for much more than an on-the-field victory Friday night during the annual Play 4 the Cure game between the two schools.

On Friday afternoon, in a typically tight contest, the Waterford High softball team beat Stonington, 1-0. But the scoreboard wasn't the point.

Friday's game was the annual "Play 4 The Cure" game played between the teams, longtime rivals at the top of the Eastern Connecticut Conference standings. The game raises money for the Lisa Wentz-Day Scholarship Fund and Camp Rising Sun.

Wentz-Day is a Stonington High graduate who died from cancer more than two decades ago, and Camp Rising Sun is a summer camp for kids with the disease.

The game was played at Veterans Field, the home of the Lancers, and the field was festooned with pink balloons, painted breast cancer awareness ribbon logos and pink foul lines. The teams wore pink uniforms with the Play 4 the Cure logo — Waterford wore dark pink, while Stonington donned light pink.

The game, which is in its fourth year, raised $1,500.
