WEST HARTFORD, CT — Having shrubbery become overgrown is not only unsightly, according to the Town of West Hartford, but when close to the road, it can be dangerous.

Town officials recently put out an alert about the problem as part of their ongoing pedestrian/vehicle safety initiative — Vision Zero.

Each year, motor vehicle accidents are attributed to overgrown shrubbery on street corners and intersections.

The town has even asked folks to take a "test to determine if you need to trim back your shrubbery."

Motorists should drive up to the white line on the road, located before the stop sign, and look to ensure they can see oncoming traffic and pedestrians without having to roll forward.

"If you have to roll forward, it's time to get out your hedge clippers," wrote the town.

For the safety of all, it is important that hedges, bushes, trees, or other growth, or any fence, do not obstruct a clear view of drivers (West Hartford Code: Chapter 177-24).

"Enforcement of these ordinances is not intended to burden property owners, but instead to raise awareness of the responsibilities of maintaining your property so that West Hartford is a safe and enjoyable community," wrote the town.

The West Hartford Zoning Office enforces this ordinance, and it can be reached at 860-561-7555.
