Driver In Stolen Vehicle Turns Onto Dead-End Street, Gets Arrested: West Haven PD

Two people were arrested after the driver of a stolen vehicle turned onto a dead-end street while trying to elude police, officials said.

WEST HAVEN, CT — Two New Haven residents were recently arrested in connection with a stolen vehicle that turned onto a dead-end street in West Haven while trying to elude police, according to officials.

A West Haven police officer saw a confirmed stolen Subaru traveling on the Boston Post Road around 12:15 p.m. on Oct. 31, according to police.

Police said the officer followed the vehicle until it was “safe to attempt a motor vehicle stop.”

“The operator of the stolen Subaru attempted to elude the officer, who was only following him at the time,” police wrote in a post on Facebook. “Unbeknownst to the operator, he had turned onto a dead-end street. The officer then activated his emergency lights and attempted to stop the vehicle.

“The operator of the Subaru tried to maneuver around the officer’s patrol car, but the officer was able to pin the Subaru against a chain-link fence, leaving it with nowhere to go. Subsequently, two adult males were arrested without incident.”

Several stolen credit cards and a small amount of drugs were found in the vehicle after a search, according to police.

The driver was identified as 40-year-old Marcelas Hines of New Haven. He was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, along with several narcotic – and credit card – related offenses, according to police.

The passenger was identified as 28-year-old Jared Benjamin of New Haven. He was also charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, along with credit card and narcotics offenses, according to police. He also had nine outstanding warrants from area police departments, police said.

Both were held in lieu of $100,000 bonds and appeared in Milford Superior court, according to police.
