WEST HAVEN, CT — West Haven’s iconic waterfront eatery Jimmies of Savin Rock is closing after 100 years of the family business, the owners announced on Saturday.

“For 100 years, Jimmies of Savin Rock has been a part of this community’s story,” the owners wrote in a post on Facebook. “From summer nights on the shoreline to family traditions passed down through generations. Today, we’re sharing the bittersweet news that Jimmies will be closing our doors on December 7th, officially bringing this 100 year chapter to a close as we prepare to retire.

“Words can’t fully express how grateful we are for your loyalty, your laughter, your stories, and the memories you’ve made here with us over the decades. To every family that made us part of their weekends, celebrations, and everyday moments, thank you for making Jimmies more than just a restaurant.

The famous restaurant, now located at 5 Rock Street in West Haven, started in 1925 as a hot dog stand called “Moxie” that was known as the birthplace of the split hot dog.

Jimmies founder Salvatore Gagliardi worked alongside his father at the Moxie hot dog stand until 1935 when he had a “vision of the original Jimmies building his business on the corner of Rock Street,” according to a post on the Jimmies website.

“In this era he would add seafood to the menu as fresh seafood was popular at the time,” the post reads. “As his success grew throughout the 1940's in the early 1950's he built his second iteration of Jimmies which was very successful, passing the business along to his two sons in the early 1970's ushering a new era in 1974 when the doors of the current building opened. In beginning it all started with his love for Rosslers Hot Dogs, which he sold for the entire time he worked until he passed the business along to his two sons.”
