Legendary West Haven Football Coach Ed McCarthy Dies, Mourned

Former West Haven football coach Ed McCarthy won seven state championships, including four with the Westies, over his 44-year career.

WEST HAVEN, CT — The West Haven community and beyond is mourning the loss of legendary former football coach Ed McCarthy, who died Sunday at the age of 77, according to GameTimeCT.

McCarthy retired in 2014 with a then-state record 331 career victories and won seven state championships over his illustrious 44-year career, according to GameTimeCT. He led West Haven to four state championships (1986, 1987, 1989 and 2002) and also won three with St. Joseph (1980-1982).

“Legend,” SCC Commissioner Al Carbone wrote in a post on Twitter. “Condolences to his family and friends. Coach McCarthy will be missed.”

WTNH News 8 sports anchor/reporter Erik Dobratz wrote in a post on Twitter, “Sad day for high school football in our state. Ed McCarthy has passed away at the age of 77. Just saw him the other night at Bennett Rink. Always a smile, always a story.....always Coach. Best to his wife and family.”

In another post on Twitter, St. Joseph football coach Joe Della Vecchia wrote “Tough day today. Lost a legend. Coach McCarthy thanks for all you’ve done for SJ football.”
