Police said both vehicles sustained ruptured fuel tanks that caused diesel fuel to spill onto the road. The Guida tractor-trailer also sustained a breach that caused “consumable goods” to spill onto the road, according to police.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, the Department of Transportation, Consumer Protection, West Shore Fire Department, and the West Haven Fire Department all responded to the scene, according to police.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Police said the driver of the Firstfleet tractor-trailer was found to be at fault for the crash, and was issued an infraction for failure to maintain proper lane.

The crash caused a partial closure of the highway for several hours on Friday morning.
