Woman Accused Of Punching Dog 36 Times Inside Vehicle: West Haven PD

Police said the woman was seen on surveillance footage punching the dog around 36 times while sitting in a vehicle outside a business.

WEST HAVEN, CT — A New York woman is accused of punching a dog more than 30 times inside a vehicle Friday morning in West Haven, according to police.

West Haven police were notified around 12:10 p.m. on Feb. 14 by a local business regarding a possible case of animal cruelty.

Police said West Haven Animal Control Officers were dispatched and arrived on the scene shortly after to investigate the complaint.

Upon reviewing the business's surveillance footage, police said animal control officers saw that a woman was sitting in her vehicle around 9:40 a.m. with a dog in the front passenger seat.

“Between 9:40 AM and 9:50 AM, while parked in front of the business, the female was seen punching the dog approximately 36 times in various parts of its body, including the head, face, and stomach,” police wrote in a news release.

The woman, identified as 28-year-old Sherin Monachan, of Merrick, New York, was later found and arrested, according to police.

The dog has since been seized by West Haven Animal Control and is being held in a safe location until a court ruling is made on the matter, police said.

Police said Monachan has been charged with cruelty to animals and was held on bond at the West Haven Police Department.
