I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my dear friend and former colleague, the Honorable Jodi Rell, Governor of the State of Connecticut from 2004 until 2011. Many news outlets are sharing her remarkable history and her dedication to the people of Connecticut, as she also served as State Representative and Lieutenant Governor. However, I would like to add my personal experience working with her in Hartford when I served as a State Senator and State Representative.

Among our legislative wins for Wilton, Governor Rell and I worked closely together to fund the renovation of Ambler Farm’s White Barn and the affordable housing complex for seniors, Wilton Commons. During our shared tenure, we also widened Route 7 from two lanes to four, computerized and modernized the rail line running from Norwalk to Danbury, and provided funding to renovate Wilton’s Public Library. Our successful statewide initiatives included passing election integrity legislation and groundbreaking climate change laws, and fighting against legalizing illicit drugs.

But beyond our working relationship, Governor Rell was a close friend and mentor. I learned much from her about building coalitions across party lines, as she modeled how to be an effective representative in a highly partisan, complex political arena. She steadied the governorship during a dark time in Connecticut’s political history and restored ethical behavior and confidence in its government. I am heartbroken that I will no longer be receiving her deeply supportive and affectionate emails and phone calls.

Rest in peace, my dear and loyal friend. Your ethical and compassionate leadership made me proud to serve alongside you.
