Reserve your spot now for Windsor Historical Society’s special Architectural Diversity in Windsor self-guided house tour to take place on Saturday, April 28th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit buildings spanning three centuries including a Victorian chapel and a tavern, barn, and grange hall that have all been converted to homes. Informed guides will point out interesting architectural features in each building and costumed members of the Windsor Jesters will welcome participants to each home playing the parts of earlier homeowners.
The April 28th house tour is one of the Society’s two major fundraisers this year, supporting public programs for schoolchildren and adults, and the operation of our historic houses, research library, exhibition galleries, and family learning center. Only 700 tickets will be sold; these are priced at $20 in advance of the tour, and $25 the day of the tour. Homes on the tour (many of which have never before been open to the public) include:
33 Mechanic Street;
382 Old River Street;
374 Old River Street;
273 Palisado Avenue;
1112 Palisado Avenue;
1330 Poquonock Avenue;
1409 Poquonock Avenue;
291 Old Rainbow Road.
Tickets are now available at:
Ashley's Distinctive Jewelry and Gifts, 555 Day Hill Road, Windsor;
Bart’s Drive-In/The Beanery Bistro, 55 Palisado Avenue, Windsor;
Bill Selig Jewelers, 161 Broad Street, Windsor;
Flowers by Timothy Snelgrove, 1763 Poquonock Avenue, Windsor;
Windsor Historical Society; 96 Palisado Avenue, Windsor.
We are still looking for volunteers to spend a pleasant two hours welcoming visitors, providing brief commentary on interior architectural details and keeping people moving steadily through the houses.
Training and information on each home will be provided to all volunteers the week before the tour. We keep the time commitment short because many volunteers like to visit the houses on the tour before and/or after their shifts. We can accommodate groups of friends who want to volunteer together, so please share this request with friends and neighbors. To volunteer, please contact Florence Barlow at flobar744@aol.com or 860-688-2486, or Ann Parkhurst asparkhurst@yahoo.com or 860-688-5663. They look forward to working with you! And this year, all tour volunteers have the option of $5 off their ticket price. Anyone seeking that discount should volunteer first, then purchase their tickets at Windsor Historical Society where the volunteer list is being kept.
You may also send a check (made out to Windsor Historical Society) to 96 Palisado Avenue and we will be happy to mail your tickets to you for an additional $2 postage and handling fee. Or order your tickets online by going to http://windsorhistoricalsociety.org (mailing charge applies.)
Day of the tour, tickets will be sold at Windsor Historical Society only, where participants can pick up their program book and map.
The Windsor Historical Society, founded in 1921, invites visitors to explore the people, places, and events that have shaped Windsor for over 370 years. The Society’s museum includes changing and permanent exhibition galleries; a hands-on history learning center for families; a research library and manuscript collection housing Windsor photographs, documents, ephemera, and genealogical materials, a museum shop and two historic houses open to the public--the 1758 John and Sarah Strong House and the 1767 Dr. Hezekiah Chaffee House.
The Windsor Historical Society is located at 96 Palisado Avenue (Route 159) and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. General admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and students and free to children under 12 and WHS members. Call (860) 688-3813 or visit us on the web at www.windsorhistoricalsociety.org for directions to the Society and more information about programs.
