Windsor Students, Police Talk Anti-Bullying in Two-Day Workshop

On February 27, 2012 and February 28, 2012, twenty students of Windsor High School, three Windsor High School staff members, and a town police officer shared time and experiences together as they attended a two-day anti-bullying and prejudice reduction leadership program entitled BRIDGES at the Town’s Community Center at 330
Windsor Avenue.

This program, a mainstay in the Windsor community for many years, was conducted by staff of the National
Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ)
which is located on Day Hill Road in Windsor. During the BRIDGES program, NCCJ staff led participants through basic diversity awareness and self-esteem building. Students and staff alike spent the 16 hours together exploring the diversity, feelings, and attitudes that prevail among people of different races, religions, ethnicities, and cultural backgrounds.

This BRIDGES program session was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Windsor High School, the Windsor Police Department, the Town of Windsor Recreation Department who provided the learning space at the town’s Community Center, and the Town of Windsor Human Relations Commission who provided the meals for the attending participants on both days.

Students were visited by town and school leaders during their time in the BRIDGES program including Chief of
Police Kevin Searles, Windsor High School Principal Russell Sills, and representation of the Town of Windsor Human Relations Commission. The Windsor Human Relations Commission was established to help with the promotion of better understanding and respect among racial, religious and ethnic groups and individuals in the town. The Commission pursues community-wide programs of education to further inter-group understanding and to
discourage and eliminate prejudice, intolerance, bigotry and discrimination.

This program is one of many initiatives supported by the Windsor Police Department and the Windsor Public Schools in an effort to educate youth and to continually improve communications and relationships in the community of Windsor.
