Clover Street School Stops, Drops and Reads

Clover Street School recently dedicated an entire day to the wonders of reading.

As a part of its observance of Read Across America Day, the intermediate school organized a number of activities aimed at making reading fun.

The day started early, with the school welcoming students and their families to a breakfast at which each student got to choose and keep a book.

Later in the morning, all students lined the hallways for a Drop-Everything-And-Read activity.

Finally, the day was concluded with a school assembly featuring several students tasked with reading stories aloud to their peers and a play performed by faculty.

"We obviously want them to enjoy reading... Every kid got a book to keep today. And they all had smiles on their faces," said Clover Street Teacher Terri Faucher, who spent most of the morning dressed as The Cat in the Hat.

Faucher was joined in the afternoon by her colleagues, including Principal Michelle Jones, in acting out Dr. Seuss' Yurtle Turtle for the student body during a "Readers' Theater".

Besides just having some good old fun, the Readers' Theater was devised to show students how books and reading take shape in other forms of entertainment.

"What you read can be acted out as well... Sometimes even movies are made from books, so we have to remember there's that connection," said Jones.

The students enjoyed the events so much, according to Faucher, they requested the activities be held again.
