February 14, 2011: Valentine's Day Lunch and Lesson, Parent/Child Book Share and Gardening Tips

Monday brings the Historical Society's lunch and lesson on the history of Valentine's Day, Clover Street School's Parent/Child Book Share and gardening tips provided by the Windsor Garden Club.

1. Here comes the sun — a high of 45ºF is expected today, accompanied by plenty of sunshine. Temperatures will dip into the low 20's tonight with heavy cloud coverage, according to National Weather Service reports.

2. Happy Valentine's Day to you and yours! In honor of this romantic day, the Windsor Historical Society invites you to join them for a lunch and lesson on the history of the holiday and the meaning behind flower arrangements and Cupid's arrow.

3. Clover Street School will host a Parent/Child Book Share for parents of the school's first-grade students tonight from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. For more information contact the school at 860-687-2050.

4. Yes it's winter, but it's never too early to concern yourself with budding annuals. Crocuses will be sprouting before you know it, and the Windsor Garden Club will meet today to discuss gardening tips for your treasured blossoms. The "Talk Soup" meeting will be held from 6:30 p.m. - 8:45 p.m. in the cafeteria of L.P. Wilson.

5. On this day in history, 278, St. Valentine was beheaded after marrying young couples in secret. The marriages performed by the holy priest were in violation of Roman Emperor Claudius the Cruel's ban of all marriages and engagements in Rome. The ban was aimed at bolstering the Roman army by keeping young Roman men from becoming preoccupied with family life.
