WINDSOR, CT — The latest Hidden Gem takes us back in time to the infancy of the town dubbed the oldest in Connecticut.

Palisado Avenue Historic District runs along state Route 159, known locally as Palisado Avenue. There's a cluster of buildings and monuments in a town green-like setting that one could easily whiz past.

The area is significant because it embodies the distinctive characteristics of architectural styles from the early 18th century through the early 20th century and architectural styles represent 18th century vernacular, Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Victorian vernacular, Queen Anne, Tudor Revival, and Colonial Revival.

According to the local historical commission, the architecture is distinctive for the "high concentration (for Connecticut) of brick construction from the 18th and 19th centuries." The Palisado Avenue Historic District also has significance in the history of Windsor.

Tucked inside the district are two monuments you just don't see every day and they are certainly each a Hidden Gem.One sits in the middle of the green and is of Major John Mason (1600-1672) Mason was a founder of Windsor and a military leader during the Pequot War.

Another monument is dedicated to Dr. Horace H. Hayden, the "father of the dental profession." Hayden (1769-1844), was a teacher, geologist and architect and was a surgeon during the War of 1812.

Hayden was the first president and professor of of the Principles of Dental Science in the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery (1840-1844), the first dental college in the world.

The monument was erected by the Hartford Dental Society in 1907.
