Akerlind, Carney, Fornwalt, Fortier: Recent Death Notices From Windsor Locks, East Windsor

WINDSOR LOCKS-EAST WINDSOR, CT — Here are some recent death notices from Windsor Locks and East Windsor.

Susanne (Wagner) Akerlind, 72, of Windsor Locks, beloved wife of Robert Akerlind, entered into eternal peace at her home on July 5, 2025, with her loving family by her side. She enjoyed a long career as a manager in the insurance industry, where she was known for her professionalism and dedication. Outside of work, Susanne had a passion for travel, especially with her husband by her side, and she never passed up the chance to enjoy a fine dinner out with a good bottle of wine. She was an active member of the Italian American Club in Windsor Locks and took joy in participating in its many family-centered events and holiday celebrations.

Mark Carney Sr., 61, of Vernon, formerly of Broad Brook, loving husband of over 30 years and best friend of Gloria J, Carney, passed away unexpectedly on July 11, 2025, at home. Mark was raised in Maine by his mother, Madeline and his stepfather, Clarence “Mickey” Neff. It was there that he gained his love for the outdoors and his passion for fishing. He moved to Connecticut and there he met and married his soul mate, Gloria. Prior to his retirement in 2005, due to his health, Mark had been employed for over 20 years as a property manager for several different apartment complexes in the area.

Donald Fornwalt Jr., 80, of Melrose, beloved husband of 40 years of Kathy Fornwalt, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on July 8, 2025. Don graduated from South Windsor High School and then proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. After retiring from IBM, he found enjoyment working part-time in Cabela's boating electronics department. Don was known for his easygoing nature. Whether he was on the water boating, fishing with his sons, listening to Elvis, tending the grill with a cold beer or spending time with loved ones, Don was happiest when surrounded by his family.

Wilfred Fortier, 83, of East Windsor, beloved husband of Nelda (Weidman) Fortier, died peacefully on July 12, 2025, surrounded by his family. Mike moved to East Windsor at the age of nine, where he graduated from East Windsor High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served prior to the Vietnam War. Upon returning from the service, he went to work as a machinist with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, retiring in Dec. 1999 after 30 years of service. Mike met and married the love of his life, Nelda Weidman, on Oct. 2, 1971, and they lived in East Windsor for over 53 years. He enjoyed woodworking and was a talented craftsman who could build cabinets, toy chests, bookshelves, and could fix or repair anything made with wood. He was meticulous and took his time crafting wood products.
