Bicyclist Struck By Van In Deadly East Windsor Crash; Driver Charged

Police have identified a bicyclist who was killed after being hit by a van head-on Wednesday. The driver is facing charges, police said.

EAST WINDSOR, CT — A bicyclist is dead and a driver is facing charges after an accident in East Windsor on Wednesday, police said in a statement.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics responded following multiple 911 calls about a serious motor vehicle accident in the area of 262 S. Main St. (Route 5) at 4:24 p.m.

A bicyclist was riding southbound on the shoulder of the northbound traffic lane on South Main Street.

The driver, identified as 34-year-old Waldemar Serrano-Acevedo, of Springfield, Massachusetts, was traveling northbound in a Chevy van and hit the bicyclist head-on, according to police.

The bicyclist, identified as 32-year-old Samalier Rivera-Tirado, of East Windsor, had suffered serious injuries and emergency responders started life-saving measures. Rivera-Tirado was taken to St. Francis Hospital for treatment but was declared dead due to his injuries at 6:40 p.m.

South Main Street was closed in both directions from Abbe Road to Scantic Road while police investigated.

Serrano-Acevedo had remained at the scene of the accident. Police administered sobriety tests which Serrano-Acevedo failed, police said.

He was arrested and taken to the police department. He was held on $1 million bond and will face multiple charges, police said.

The case is ongoing.
