Just 220 out of 3,846 registered voters have cast ballots in today's referendum at the District 1 polling location at Town Hall as of 11:45 am, according to Democratic Registrar of Voters Dan Nadeau.
That represents about 5 percent of registered voters.
The proposed $35.4 million budget calls for a 3.69 percent spending increase.
That was too much for one resident who voted against the measure.
"I'm a senior citizen and senior citizens always vote no," said the resident who declined to give his name. "We've reached a point where senior citizens who are past 60 have paid enough taxes. We've paid taxes our whole life."
One resident disagreed, however, saying that she voted in favor of the budget because of the additional information provided by the town.
"It was a small spending increase and the information they have made sense," Donna Masters said. "They kept it simple."
The polls at District 1 and District 2 are open until 8 p.m.
