Hidden Gems Of Hartford And Tolland Counties

EAST WINDSOR, CT — This week's trip to a Hidden Gem takes us to Sofia's Plaza in East Windsor, and a food service provider tucked into the bend of an L-shaped building, which is actually multiple businesses under one roof.

Belvedere Polish Delicatessen opened in 2004. specializing in quality Polish and European imported foods. In 2023, the business was purchased by Pierogi Queen, a longtime staple in Enfield, which moved its Polish food production operation to East Windsor, along with the Smoke BBQ Cafe.

Smoke BBQ has been smoking fresh meat, cheese, fish and spices since 2009, when Sasha Scherla took over the businesses in Thompsonville and renovated the Old Country Banquet Hall into a gorgeous showplace. The cafe features award-winning pierogi, kielbasa, kapusta and golabki, as well as favorites such as brisket, burnt ends, pulled pork, barbecued chicken and ribs.

Scherla sold the event venue in 2023, but has been retained by the new owners as its main caterer. Other services include party trays, delivery and online ordering
