Moose Spotted Near Highway In Windsor Locks, Prompting DEEP Warning

"When struck, moose often end up impacting vehicle windshields," according to a motorist advisory from the DEEP.

WINDSOR LOCKS, CT — Officials from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) have issued a warning to motorists, urging them to use caution after a moose was spotted near Interstate 91 Tuesday night.

The animal was seen near Exit 40. Only about 100 moose are known to live in the state, according to the DEEP.

"During this time of year, moose may be seeking territory in search of new areas to occupy, making them more of a public safety concern," DEEP spokesman Paul Copleman said in a written statement. "Because moose are darker in color, stand much higher than deer, and are most active at dusk and dawn, observing reflective eye-shine from headlights is infrequent and, when struck, moose often end up impacting vehicle windshields. When checking the road for moose at night, look higher than you normally would for deer and reduce the speed of your vehicle."
